Manchester City and Brazil goalkeeper Ederson has been awarded the 2023 Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper award following his outstanding performances during the club’s treble-winning season.
As the primary goalkeeper for Pep Guardiola’s side, Ederson played a crucial role in Manchester City’s triumphs in the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League. Notably, his exceptional performance in the Champions League final against Inter included five saves, securing victory with a stunning save in the closing moments.
This marks Ederson’s first win of the award, having previously finished in third place in 2019. The recognition comes amid a season where he played a key role in Manchester City’s domestic and international success.
In an interesting turn, Thibaut Courtois of Real Madrid was named in the 2023 FIFA FIFPRO Men’s World XI instead of Ederson. Courtois, along with Al Hilal and Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, was shortlisted for the award.
Expressing gratitude at the awards ceremony in London, Ederson thanked his family and teammates, acknowledging their importance to his achievements. In addition to the domestic double and the UEFA Champions League title, Ederson also secured the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup during the season.
The initial five-player shortlist for the men’s award was announced in September, with Andre Onana and Marc-Andre ter Stegen later removed from contention.
