‘Shape Of You,’ by Ed Sheeran, has become the first song to exceed three billion Spotify streams.
“Shape of You“, which is featured on Ed Sheeran’s third album (Divide), surpassed the milestone today (December 22) – after first being uploaded on the streaming service, Spotify in January 2017.
Sheeran claimed he couldn’t be more “chuffed” by the news, calling it “totally wild,” before going into detail about the song’s origins in a video published by Spotify (see below).
“[‘Shape Of You’] wasn’t really meant to make the album,” he explained, “but when I finished making the song, Ben Cook, from my label, said it had to be a single – but I wanted ‘Castle On The Hill’ to be the single. We agreed to disagree and put both songs out at once. And I have to say, Ben, I was wrong and you were very much right. And here we are with ‘Shape of You’ at three billion.”

This isn’t Sheeran’s first Spotify milestone, as several of his hits have crossed the one billion streams mark including ‘Castle On The Hill’, ‘Happier’, ‘Galway Girl’, ‘I Don’t Care’ and ‘Beautiful People’, earning their spots on Spotify’s Billions Club playlist.
