Drake institutes second petition against universal music group over Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’
Drake has filed a second lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), alleging that the label failed to prevent the release of Kendrick Lamar’s controversial song “Not Like Us.” The Canadian rapper claims that the track contains false accusations of sex offences, including allegations of paedophilia, which have caused significant damage to his reputation.
In the legal action filed in a Texas court, Drake accuses UMG of being aware of the song’s content before its release and asserts that the label had a responsibility to intervene.
Specifically, Drake claims that the song falsely labelled him as a “paedophile” and “predator,” accusations he insists were not only defamatory but also harmful to his personal and professional standing.
The lawsuit comes just a day after Drake initiated similar legal proceedings in New York, where he alleged that UMG used unethical and unlawful methods to boost the song’s popularity on Spotify.
In both cases, Drake argues that the label opted to prioritize Kendrick Lamar’s commercial success over his well-being as an artist on their roster.
Drake further claims that UMG’s actions were part of a larger strategy to turn “Not Like Us” into a viral hit. He asserts that the label used consumer hysteria to generate massive revenue while simultaneously damaging his career.
Additionally, the lawsuit accuses UMG of engaging in a “pay-to-play scheme” by allegedly paying radio station iHeart to promote the song.
As part of the legal process, Drake’s legal team is seeking permission to depose key figures at both UMG and iHeart. They are requesting access to information that would bolster their claims, which include a defamation suit against UMG.
Depending on the outcome of the depositions, Drake’s team has hinted that they may pursue further claims for civil fraud and racketeering.
This latest lawsuit intensifies the ongoing legal battle between Drake and UMG, raising further questions about the influence of record labels in shaping the careers of their artists and their responsibility to protect their reputations.
