DJ Switch Responds to Backlash After Controversial Comment on Buhari’s Death

Nigerian disc jockey and human rights activist Obianuju Catherine Udeh, popularly known as DJ Switch, has stirred public debate with her reaction to the death of Nigeria’s former president, Muhammadu Buhari, who reportedly passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London after a prolonged undisclosed illness.
In a short but pointed post on social media, DJ Switch wrote:
“Wow! The sweet reality of inevitability. RIP MF. One down.”
The comment, which many interpreted as celebratory and harsh, quickly drew criticism from social media users who accused the #EndSARS activist of lacking empathy and disrespecting the dead.
Unfazed by the backlash, DJ Switch released a follow-up video in which she doubled down on her statement. She questioned the rush by some Nigerians to eulogize Buhari, a leader she believes caused lasting damage to the country.
“What exactly did Buhari achieve apart from ruining Nigeria?” she asked in the video. “When a leader governs poorly, people will celebrate their death. But when you rule with fairness, the people will mourn you when you’re gone.”
She further defended her stance by saying her reaction stemmed from a sense of justice.
“I don’t owe anyone proof of my empathy. That news felt like justice to me. Next on the list, T-Pain, how far?” she added though the meaning of the reference to “T-Pain” remains unclear.

DJ Switch rose to national prominence during the #EndSARS protests in October 2020, when she livestreamed the controversial military crackdown at Lekki Toll Gate, where peaceful protesters were reportedly shot by Nigerian soldiers. Her actions during that period earned her international recognition and also made her a target of government scrutiny.
Her recent remarks have reignited debates over how public figures should respond to the death of polarizing leaders, especially in a nation still grappling with deep divisions over its recent political history.
