South African DJ and record producer, DJ Maphorisa, recently shed light on his introduction to the Amapiano sound during an interview with Nigerian media personality Adesope Olajide (Shopsydoo). According to DJ Maphorisa, it was Wizkid who first exposed him to Amapiano, a genre of electronic dance music originating from South Africa and gaining global popularity since the early 2010s.

Maphorisa described Amapiano as initially being an “underground and instrumental only” sound until Wizkid brought it to his attention. Their paths crossed in Pretoria when Wizkid was in South Africa, and later, during a scheduled performance, Wizkid noticed a DJ playing Amapiano, sparking his interest. Impressed, Wizkid advised DJ Maphorisa to pay attention to the emerging genre and urged him to “Jump on it” immediately.

Emphasizing the significance of staying attuned to evolving sounds, DJ Maphorisa highlighted the dynamic nature of the music genre.
