DJ Jimmy Jatt opens up on losing eyesight, kidney disease diagnosis

Nigerian disc jockey Oluwaforijimi Adewale Amu, popularly known as DJ Jimmy Jatt, has opened up about his health challenges in a candid interview on Channels TV’s Rubbin’ Minds, hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu.
The 58-year-old Lagos Island-born DJ revealed that he was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease following a series of health issues, including the need for eye surgery to restore his vision.
Sharing his journey, DJ Jimmy Jatt explained that his health challenges began after he decided to explore the world, having spent most of his life in Lagos.
In his words: “Maybe I caused it myself because, in 2019, I decided to spend more time outside Nigeria. I had lived all my life in Lagos and wanted to explore other parts of the world—Europe, America, everywhere. But in 2020, I started experiencing health issues. Due to the travel restrictions at the time, I remained in Nigeria. I lost my sight and had to undergo surgery to regain it.”
After recovering from his eye surgery, he resumed his plan to live abroad and relocated to the U.S. There, he was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and began dialysis treatment. DJ Jimmy Jatt later returned to Nigeria for a kidney transplant, following which he took time off to recover fully.
Despite these challenges, the veteran DJ continued his passion for music, performing across America and Europe. He eventually returned to Nigeria in December after deciding it was time to come home.
Jimmy Jatt clarified that his kidney disease was not linked to lifestyle choices.
“I’ve never smoked and had long stopped drinking alcohol,” he stated, dispelling any misconceptions about the cause of his condition.
The legendary DJ’s resilience and determination remain an inspiration as he navigates his health journey while continuing to impact the music industry.
