DJ Cuppy contributes £100,000 to aid African graduate students at Oxford University.
Florence I. Otedola, a DJ and music producer better known by her stage name DJ Cuppy, has donated £100,000 to the Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx) to help support African graduate students at Oxford.
The Cuppy Africa Oxford Scholars Fund aims to assist outstanding African graduates with unforeseen expenses and give them access to the knowledge, tools, and networks they need to have the greatest effect on Africa and beyond.
In an interview with Cherwell, Cuppy explained that “the idea behind this fund is to support particularly students that are from African descent, regardless of what they’re studying, to be able to have access to resources […] It could be accommodation, it could be learning materials, it could be mental health aid, it could be anything needed to get you through outside of academia.”
The previously formed Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx), which works across the University “to make engagement with Africa a strategic priority for Oxford,” will receive financing from the fund.
The contribution would enable the project, which encourages more African students to enrol in graduate programmes at the university, to “address the needs of the most vulnerable students,” such as those who have any kind of disability or parental responsibilities.
