Did Wizkid Sample This 1980 Love Song To Create ‘Essence’ With Tems?
Sampling is a common practice in the music industry, where artists borrow elements from existing songs to create something new.
In this case of WIzkid’s “Essence,” featuring Tems, rumours are making rounds that an aspect of it was sampled from 1980s Love Sensation by Loleatta Holloway.
Checks by Mp3bullet, however, did not establish a correlation in sounds, elements nor rhythm between the two songs.
Other than these, the interpolation metrics which is solely for musical composition could not be established by Mp3bullet.
Since its released in 2020, Essence has been a massive hit. The song has garnered widespread acclaim both within Nigeria and internationally. Its success can be attributed to various factors, including its catchy melody, infectious rhythm, and the captivating chemistry between Wizkid and Tems.
Meanwhile, Loleatta Holloway sang the song “Love Sensation” in 1980. It is from her self-titled album. Dan Hartman wrote and produced the song, Norman Harris orchestrated it, and Tom Moulton mixed it. During a week at the top of the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart in September 1980, the song was a hit.[1] Many songs were sampled from it, especially dance music like “Ride on Time” by Black Box from 1989 and now, Wizkid’s Essence.
Hartman’s original vision for “Love Sensation” was Bette Midler or Patti LaBelle singing the song. He went to her to sing the vocals, nevertheless, after witnessing Holloway perform at a nightclub. In multiple interviews, Holloway revealed that during a two-day recording session, Hartman made her sing the song 29 times. As a result, she lost her voice and couldn’t get it back until she mixed Vicks VapoRub into her coffee.
