Afrobeats artistes now competing with Drake – Davido
Nigerian music superstar Davido has shared his thoughts on the rapid growth and acceptance of Afrobeats worldwide. Speaking at the Hip TV panel discussion with the United States Advisory Council on Africa Diaspora Engagement and Leaders In Nigeria’s Creative Industries, Davido expressed pride in the genre’s progress.
Davido, who has been at the forefront of Afrobeats’ global push, stated that artists in the genre are now on the same level as international stars like his friend, Drake.
He noted that Afrobeats artistes are selling the same tickets as global pop and hip-hop stars, a testament to the genre’s growing influence.
The ‘Unavailable‘ crooner emphasized that the earnings from a single Afrobeats song can translate to generational wealth.
He encouraged young musicians to collaborate with each other rather than chasing international features, stressing that “When you collaborate with your friends, they put their all.”
Davido’s advice to young musicians is to focus on collaborations within the industry, as this will lead to more meaningful and impactful music. He believes that this approach will help Afrobeats continue to grow and solidify its place on the global music scene.
He said, “Afrobeats Artistes are selling the same tickets as Drake. Now one song as an afrobeat artist can change your generation.”
In addition, Davido has attributed his successful collaborations with American singer Chris Brown to their genuine friendship. In a recent panel discussion, Davido emphasized the importance of working with friends, stating, “Me and Chris Brown are actually friends. When you collaborate with people that are your friends, everybody puts their all into it.”
