Davido Shares How Don Jazzy and D’banj Inspired His Afrobeats Journey
Nigerian superstar Davido has opened up about the pivotal moment that inspired him to delve into the world of Afrobeats. During a recent interview, the Grammy-nominated artist recounted how a chance encounter with music icons Don Jazzy and D’banj in 2008 ignited his passion for music.
At just 14 years old, Davido had a unique experience when he was tasked with picking up Don Jazzy and D’banj from the airport in Atlanta. The duo had arrived in the U.S. for a performance and a potential collaboration with global music star Kanye West.
Davido vividly recalled the awe he felt witnessing their lifestyle, including an unforgettable moment where they spent over $20,000 at a nightclub. This exposure to the high-energy world of Afrobeats left a lasting impression on the young Davido and ultimately motivated him to pursue a music career.
Reflecting on the experience, Davido shared, “It was more than just music; it was a lifestyle that I wanted to be part of. That night was a defining moment for me.”

During a podcast interview with ‘Rollingout,’ the DMW boss reflected on his Christian upbringing and the influence his father, a successful businessman and elder in the church, had on his personal and professional life.
Davido credited his father’s religious values for guiding him through difficult times. Growing up as a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and attending a Christian college, he learned the importance of faith in facing life’s trials.
In his own words, Davido shared, “My dad is very successful, but he’s an elder in the church. I grew up as a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. I attended a Christian college.”
