Darkoo accuses Peter of P-Square of sabotaging “Focus on Me” music video
Popular Nigerian rapper Darkoo has taken to social media to accuse Mr. P, one-half of the legendary P-Square duo, of being behind the removal of her music video, ‘Focus on Me,‘ from YouTube.
The song, a cover of P-Square’s classic hit, ‘Do Me,‘ was allegedly removed due to claims of copyright infringement.
In her posts, Darkoo expressed frustration at the six-day removal of her video, which she claimed disrupted the momentum and hard work she had put into the project. “I ensured to reach out to all parties involved and requested the appropriate permissions to release the song,” she stated, insisting that she adhered to copyright protocols.
The rapper further alleged that Peter Okoye’s decision to take down the video was motivated by her refusal to include him in the song’s release.
According to her, Okoye had expressed interest in featuring on the track, a gesture she initially declined but said she was open to considering for a potential remix.
Darkoo’s outburst has sparked discussions on social media, with fans weighing in on the broader issue of copyright enforcement and artistic collaboration in the Nigerian music industry.
As of now, Peter Okoye has not issued a public response to the allegations, leaving fans awaiting further clarification.
Her statement on social media read, “I wasn’t going to say anything, but my music video was taken down for six days by Peter of P-Square in an attempt to sabotage the song completely. Fortunately, the video is back up now. Let me be clear: I had all the necessary clearance for the sample. This isn’t my first rodeo using a sample, as you know, and I did everything by the book.”
“To put things into perspective, they are receiving 50%—rightfully so. Yet, Mr. Peter wanted to be featured on the song and even created his own verse for it. He told me not to speak to or clear the sample with his brothers, Jude and Paul (who, by the way, have been incredibly helpful in resolving the issues). He claimed they would bring “unnecessary problems” for me.”
“However, as soon as the song dropped, Mr. Peter completely switched on me. He began causing problems because he wanted to be featured on the track. Although I intended to have him on the remix, I guess that wasn’t enough. Instead, he chose to act out of anger, manipulate the situation, and attempt to sabotage the song simply because I didn’t bow to his demands.”
“He took my video down, not for reasons related to copyright or contracts, but because he didn’t get what he wanted (to be featured). He even told my team that I had “disrespected him,” which is why he took action. His actions have hurt me deeply, affecting my fans, ruining my hard work, and wasting the time and money invested. It’s heartbreaking because I grew up admiring him, and to see someone I once looked up to actively trying to hurt me and block my success is incredibly painful.”
” For the record: I had the clearance, contracts, and paperwork from P-Square. I went above and beyond to ensure their rights were respected and handled everything correctly with the right people, covering all contributors. This isn’t how our OGs are supposed to behave. It’s sad and disappointing.”
