Former Barcelona defender Dani Alves to stand trial over alleged sexual assault.
The ex-full-back for Barcelona Dani Alves will go on trial for allegedly sexually abusing a woman in Barcelona in December of last year.
According to AFP, veteran Brazilian defender Dani Alves will go on trial in Spain on sexual assault accusations stemming from an alleged incident in Barcelona in December of last year.
After being seized by Spanish authorities in January, the Brazilian was suspected of raping a young woman at the Sutton nightclub’s restroom in Barcelona in December 2022.
He was on holiday in Spain at the time after playing for Brazil at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
He was detained after being refused bail because, according to the authorities, he posed a flight risk.
Alves stated in June that he has “a clear conscience” over the incident, although it is alleged that if found guilty, he may spend up to 12 years in prison.
There is currently no scheduled trial date.
Alves, who is now 40 years old, most recently played football for Club Universidad Nacional in Mexico. He played for Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus during a trophy-laden career in which he won 42 trophies while earning 127 caps for Brazil.
