I was depressed in 2015 because I couldn’t get into the university – Crayon
Nigerian Afropop artist Crayon shared his experience with depression during an interview with Cool FM. He opened up about his struggles in 2015 when he couldn’t gain admission to a higher institution and how it affected his mental health.
Crayon explained that the difficulty in gaining admission made him feel left out as all his friends had been admitted to universities while he was not. He felt lonely and bored because he was the youngest among his friends, and they were all away at universities in different locations.
During this period, he had to rewrite his JAMB (Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board) exams five times because he was not passing, which added to his feelings of frustration and hopelessness. This challenging phase had a negative impact on his mental health.
Crayon’s candid revelation highlights the importance of mental health awareness and the challenges many young people face during significant life transitions like gaining admission to higher education.

The singer even disclosed that he was a football player, before his big break in music. He did, however, note that he hit a wall in his career because of various corrupt practices in the field here in Nigeria. This also added to the dogpile of issues leading to his downward spiraling mantel health.
Thankfully, in May 2019, after signing with Blowtime Entertainment, a label under Mavin Records, he received his big break in the music industry.
