Nigerian Afropop artist and songwriter Charles Chibueze Chukwu, popularly known as Crayon, has revealed why he has yet to pursue higher education.

Crayon had enormous success in 2022 with his smash track ‘Ijo (Laba Laba),’ which introduced him to new audiences and established him as one of Afrobeats’ most sought-after chorus masters.

He revealed in a recent appearance on Trending on Hip TV how he took the Joint Admission Matriculation Exam (JAMB) five times. According to Crayon, he gave up after the fifth attempt, which resulted in him writing his Post UTME outside of the hall.

Crayon described how he met music producer Baby Fresh when he was taking the JAMB for the fourth time. Baby Fresh showed interest in him, and this led Crayon to decide to tell his parents that he would be giving up academics in favour of music.

“At the fourth time, I already met Baby Fresh and I knew I won’t be able to juggle school and music at the same time. So I sat my parent’s down and told them I want to make music now.”

Like other parents, Crayon’s father was unimpressed with his job decision, therefore he persuaded him to attempt the JAMB for a fifth time.

The singer claims that when he decided to pursue a career in music, he had just completed his fifth JAMB exam and was writing his post-UTME in Unilag.

Crayon’s journey to popularity was difficult because he had to wait a long time to have his big break.

In any case, Crayon would be happy that his efforts paid off, as would his family.
