Chris Brown Scores Legal Win as Civil Assault Case Is Dismissed, Criminal Charges Still Pending in U.K.
American R&B superstar Chris Brown has secured a partial legal reprieve after a civil lawsuit filed against him in connection with an alleged assault in London was officially withdrawn.
Abe Diaw, who filed the suit in 2023, accused Brown of violently attacking him at TAPE nightclub in London. According to court documents, Diaw claimed the singer struck him multiple times with a Don Julio 1942 tequila bottle and stomped on him while he was unconscious, leaving him with serious injuries.
In a new twist, Diaw filed paperwork on Friday at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, requesting that the civil case be dismissed with prejudice, a legal term that indicates the case is permanently closed and cannot be refiled. Although no formal explanation has been provided, dismissals with prejudice are often indicative of a private settlement reached outside of court.
Despite this legal breakthrough, the Grammy-winning artist is not completely in the clear. Brown is still facing criminal charges in the United Kingdom tied to the same nightclub incident. Earlier this year, U.K. authorities charged him with assault and possession of a weapon following his brief arrest upon arrival in the country for his ongoing world tour.
The singer, who was subsequently released on bail, made a court appearance two weeks ago, where he entered a not guilty plea. That criminal case remains active, and no trial date has been publicly confirmed.
While the civil suit dismissal offers Brown some legal relief, the looming criminal proceedings in the U.K. mean the matter is far from over.
