Chike Shares Why He Stopped Attending Church and Warms Hearts With a Generous Surprise to a Loyal Fan

Nigerian singer Chike has shed light on a personal chapter of his life, revealing the unusual experience that pushed him away from church gatherings and the private moments that continue to shape his faith.
In a recent chat, the Roju crooner looked back on an encounter that left him uneasy years ago.
He narrated how he once walked into a church service only to discover that the woman leading praise and worship was someone he had previously been romantically involved with.
What should have been a moment of worship quickly turned into an awkward blast from the past.
“The lady leading praise and worship… we had history,” he recalled with a laugh. “I was having flashbacks. She was praying, and I was just wondering what was happening.”
The encounter was so distracting that Chike couldn’t bring himself to return the following week.
Still, he was quick to make one thing clear: his absence from church doesn’t mean he has walked away from his faith. Chike opened up about the period earlier in his career when he leaned heavily on prayer; one particularly tough night in Primewater Gardens, living with his then-girlfriend, stands out vividly.
“I just said, God, I don’t have anybody. I don’t have anything. Just help me,” he said.
The singer also shared a humorous but bewildering memory from the week he released his debut album. After unknowingly taking a very potent edible, he found himself temporarily disconnected from reality. “Three, four days into the album release, I didn’t even know where I was,” he confessed.
Though he no longer attends church, Chike said he still believes strongly in God. What has changed is his view of what spirituality should look like.
For him, faith is less about formal structures and more about how people treat one another. “You just need to do right by people,” he said, adding that he refuses to force himself into a rigid version of Christian living.

Away from the deeper reflections, Chike also sparked joy online this week with a heartwarming gesture toward a devoted listener.
After Spotify Wrapped rolled out, a fan named Ope shared her results proudly; she had streamed Chike’s music for an astonishing 36,341 minutes, placing her in his top 1% of listeners. She jokingly lamented that the singer had not acknowledged her loyalty.
Chike eventually came across the post and responded in the sweetest way possible:
“Good morning! Your bank, please!”
He didn’t reveal how much he gifted her, but the gesture sent social media buzzing. Soon after, fans flooded the timeline with their own Wrapped statistics, each one hoping to get their own little blessing from the singer.
Chike’s mix of candid reflection and unexpected generosity reminded fans once again why he remains one of the most beloved voices in Nigerian music, a grounded, human, and heartfelt presence.
