Premier League statement on racial abuse towards Wesley Fofana

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has become the latest footballer to be subjected to racial abuse, following his team’s match against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, March 16, 2025.
The French centre-back took to social media to expose the offensive messages and insults he received from some Arsenal supporters during and after the game.
Sharing screenshots of the abuse, Fofana condemned the racism, calling for urgent action from both social media platforms and football authorities.
Reacting to the incident, Fofana emphasized that racism has no place in football or society, stating:
“In 2025, stupidity and cruelty can no longer hide. It’s not just football; it’s not just a ‘game’ when some believe that their skin colour makes them superior to others. It’s time for things to change, for platforms to take action, and for everyone to take responsibility.”
The Premier League also condemned the abuse directed at Fofana, expressing disappointment and vowing to take action against those responsible.
“The Premier League is appalled by the abuse suffered by Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana after their match against Arsenal. We will offer our full support to Wesley and the club. We work with the social media platforms and the authorities to ensure any individuals found guilty of abuse face the strongest possible consequences. Football is for everyone and there is no place for discrimination in our game or wider society.”
This is not the first time Fofana has spoken out against racism in football, having previously called out discriminatory remarks directed at him in past incidents.
The incident has reignited discussions on racism in football, with calls for stricter punishments and better monitoring by social media platforms to curb online abuse.
Fans, football bodies, and anti-racism organizations continue to demand more decisive action to tackle discrimination in the sport.
