Medical booked! Romeo Lavia close to sealing £58m Chelsea transfer
Young talent Romeo Lavia is on track to undergo a medical evaluation at Chelsea on Wednesday after turning down Liverpool’s offer in favor of a £58 million transfer to Stamford Bridge.
Southampton accepted Chelsea’s proposal of £53 million plus £5 million in add-ons for the Belgian midfielder on Tuesday. As reported by the Daily Mail, the 19-year-old is scheduled for his medical assessment on Wednesday.
Previously, Southampton had approved a £60 million offer from Liverpool, but Lavia opted to join Chelsea instead. This decision follows shortly after Moises Caicedo also chose to reject Liverpool, opting to join Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
With the signing of Lavia, Chelsea’s spending under owner Todd Boehly, who completed his takeover of the club in May 2022, will reach nearly £1 billion. This summer, Chelsea has already invested almost £300 million in acquisitions, including Caicedo, who set a British record transfer fee at £115 million, as well as Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson.
Former Manchester City academy prospect Lavia will be competing against strong contenders like Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Conor Gallagher, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Lesley Ugochukwu for a starting position in Pochettino’s lineup. This influx of talent further solidifies Chelsea’s commitment to building a formidable team under new ownership.
