My father thought I was the kid from hell – Charly Boy
Nigerian singer Charly Boy has opened up about his tumultuous relationship with his father, former Supreme Court Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, during an interview on the ‘With Chude‘ podcast.
He revealed that his struggles with authority started at home, particularly in clashing with his father’s strict rules and commands.
“My issues with the status quo began in the house. I always wondered why my father had to give us all these commands—time to eat, time to pray, time for everything. I got sick and tired of it,” Charly Boy shared.
He expressed frustration over the rigid household structure, which often led to him being punished. “I was the one who was whipped the most among my siblings and punished the most because I wouldn’t do what I was told. My father forgot he was the one who taught us to question everything. So I would often challenge him vocally,” he explained.

Charly Boy admitted that his relationship with his father was strained for many years, with mutual misunderstandings defining their dynamic. “I didn’t understand his methods, and he thought I was a rebellious kid from hell who needed serious punishment. We didn’t really like each other until we both grew older and started to appreciate our personalities.”
He continued, “We never agreed on anything, which made it hard for us to bond. He didn’t know who I was, and I didn’t know who he was.”
In a February 2024 interview on ‘The Honest Bunch Podcast‘, Charly Boy further discussed his father’s religious influence on his early life, which led him toward pursuing a path as a reverend father—a role he eventually realized was not for him.
He later disowned his parents, feeling misunderstood and disconnected from them.
