Carterefe & Berri Tiga Drag Each Other Over ‘Machala’ Song Ownership
Carterefe and popular artist Berri Tiga have publicly criticised one another online over who is the rightful owner of the hit song “Machala.”
The Wizkid-inspired Amapiano-infused song peaked at number one on the Apple Music Top Songs Nigeria Chart and the Afrobeats Billboard Chart after its release on Friday, July 29, 2022.
However, in an unexpected turn of events, the song was abruptly taken down from all major streaming services. This is thought to be the result of split difficulties.
In an interview, Carter stated that he had the initial idea for the song and reached out to Berri-Tiga to spice it up. However, there have been some concerns since Berri-Tiga emphasised online that “he created and sang the song 100%.”
That comment, which trended online, triggered Carter Efe to say “his side of the story”, labelling the rising singer as being ungrateful for wanting to claim ownership of the song.
According to the comedian, he wanted to also put another singer, Hotkid, on the song, but Berri-Tiga begged him not to.
Responding to Carter Efe’s claims, Berri Tiga decided to release a video stating that he wasn’t claiming ownership of the song but was just stating that he wrote and sang the complete song.
According to the singer, Carter Efe offered him a 95% – 5% deal (in favour of Carter) as the splitting deal for the song.
He also said that at one point, Carterefe and another Instagram comedian who also happens to be a label owner, Sydney Talker, offered him a hundred thousand Naira to pay him back for the song.

Berri Tiga also alleged that Carterefe was going to shows to perform the songs alone and was no longer keeping him updated on the song’s promotional activities.
Berri Tiga said ;
“We did a song, I sang the song from the beginning to the end, we dropped the song, you are not tagging me on your page, you are not carrying me to show. You offered me a 95-5 percent, you taking 95 and me taking 5% off a song that I sang from beginning to the end. You sent a deal that I don’t have a right to perform this song, you said It was a mistake, we finally settled for 70% – 30%. My management advised we do a 40-60 but i was like Carter should take 70, let me take 30 since Carter is promoting the song.
I got a call from Sydney talker and Carter the next day telling me that they are going to pay me off the song with one hundred thousand naira. A song i wrote from the beginning to end, where does that happen?”
