Carney Chukwuemeka was a bright spot for Chelsea in their 1-0 loss to Manchester City on Thursday evening at Stamford Bridge, given his verdict on the loss to Man City.

The 19-year-old came on for Christian Pulisic in the first half of Chelsea’s Premier League match as the American added to Chelsea’s expanding injury list.

His low strike just before halftime was The Blues’ best chance of the game, with City goalkeeper Ederson grateful to see the effort blast against his near post.

“My heart skipped. I thought it was in,” admitted Chukwuemeka on Sky Sports following the loss. “[It was] not meant to be today. “

The teenager has yet to open his Chelsea record since joining Aston Villa in the summer, but he is hopeful that the upcoming games will present him with a chance.

“Hopefully it [his first Chelsea goal] will come in the next few games,” he added.

Speaking on the flow of the game, Chukwuemeka believes that the performance was promising despite losing the encounter.

“We worked really hard out of possession. On the ball, we created chances and caused them some problems. We had the better first half. Couldn’t find the goal. [It’s] something to build on.”

Before the hosts fell behind in the second half, the winger came close to creating an opportunity for them. If Rodri hadn’t deflected his whipped cross from the left toward Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva might have blasted the ball home.

The summer signing knew that after he crossed the white lines, he needed to concentrate because it was the longest cameo he has played since joining the team, even though it was against a top team in a packed Stamford Bridge.

“Sometimes it can be a bit nerve-wrecking, but you have to switch on,” he mentioned when asked about coming off the bench. “I had to get my mind in the game, see how I could help the team.”

Given that Chelsea has only scored three goals in their last six games, Graham Potter might want to change up the offence.
