Burnley 0-3 Manchester City: Erling Haaland double helps visitors begin Premier League title defence with win.
Manchester City began their Premier League title defence with a convincing victory over Burnley, thanks in large part to Erling Haaland’s impressive performance in front of goal.
Haaland, who scored 52 goals in all competitions for City last season, wasted no time in getting on the scoresheet this season. He opened the scoring just 185 seconds into the match with a stunning left-footed strike after pouncing on a header down by Rodri from Kevin de Bruyne’s cross.
Despite the passionate home crowd at Burnley, the early goal set the tone for the match, and City dominated proceedings. Rodri added a third goal for City with 15 minutes remaining after the Burnley defense failed to clear a free-kick.
City’s night was marred by another injury to Kevin de Bruyne, who limped off after only 23 minutes and was replaced by Mateo Kovacic. De Bruyne’s injury history will be a cause for concern for City and manager Pep Guardiola.
While City secured the victory, Guardiola was visibly agitated on the sidelines, indicating that he expected more from his team despite the comfortable win.
Erling Haaland’s clinical finishing was a highlight of the match, even though he was not heavily involved in the action. Guardiola’s demand for perfection from his players was evident when he insisted that a cameraman move out of the way as he spoke to Haaland at halftime.
Overall, it was a successful start to the season for City, but De Bruyne’s injury will be a key talking point as they look to defend their Premier League title.
