Burna Boy reveals why he sampled JHus’ Instagram story on ‘City Boys’

Nigerian award-winning artist Burna Boy has revealed the reason behind sampling J Hus’s Instagram story on his song “City Boys” from his seventh album, “I Told Them.” The duo have collaborated on several songs together, showcasing their musical chemistry.

In an interview with Henrieviii of Kiss Fresh, Burna Boy explained that he used the audio from J Hus’s Instagram story as the intro to “City Boys” to highlight an important message. J Hus, a British rapper and singer, often referred to himself as “Mr. Ugly” due to society’s perception of black African men not meeting conventional beauty standards.

Burna explained that J Hus’s message on the track resonates with the experiences of black African men who may not have been considered attractive by societal beauty standards. He emphasized that there was a time when such individuals were not celebrated, and societal norms favored light-skinned individuals.

By incorporating J Hus’s voice and message into “City Boys,” Burna Boy aimed to shed light on these issues and challenge beauty standards and stereotypes that marginalized certain groups of people. The song serves as a commentary on society’s changing perceptions and the importance of self-acceptance and self-love.

However, the story has changed because to the global dominance of Afrobeats, UK Drills, and other music genres. Now that everyone around them and the men of color are aware of their actual value.

They are not “Ugly” as was previously assumed. “We were calling each other all kinds of names. J. Hus called himself Mr. Ugly, he claimed. A new generation of black musicians who are praised for their distinctive looks and styles has emerged from the music industry.
