Burna Boy says Grammy created the African category because of him
Grammy-winning Nigerian artist, Damini Ogulu, widely known as Burna Boy, has proudly claimed that the Recording Academy introduced the “Best African Music Performance” category to the Grammy Awards because of his influence.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the self-proclaimed African Giant asserted that he holds a sense of responsibility for the creation of this new category within the Grammys. Burna Boy’s album “Twice As Tall” clinched the “Best Global Music Album” award at the 63rd Grammy Awards in 2021, further elevating his international recognition.
However, Burna Boy also pondered whether the newly established “Best African Music Performance” category would gain the same level of prestige as other Grammy categories.
Burna said; “I do feel somewhat responsible for the new ‘Best African Music Performance’ category, which is nice. At the same time, what is it really? Is it a consolation category? Will it hold as much prestige? I’m waiting to see.”
The organizers of the Grammy Awards officially announced the establishment of the “Best African Music Performance” category in June. This category is inclusive of both contemporary and traditional music genres from the African continent, spanning a wide range including Afrobeats, Afro-pop, Amapiano, High Life, Fuji, and other diverse styles.
The introduction of this category reflects the Grammys’ recognition of the vibrant and diverse musical landscape of Africa, and it further solidifies the global acknowledgment of African artists’ contributions to the music industry.
