Burna Boy Makes History with Multiple Nominations at BET Hip-Hop Awards
Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, known as Burna Boy, has received an impressive seven nominations for the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards.
The “African Giant” artist is tied with DJ Khaled for the third-most nominations, following Drake (9) and Cardi B and 21 Savage, who lead the pack with 12 nods each.
Burna Boy has made history by becoming the first African artist to be nominated in the Artist of the Year category at the BET Hip-Hop Awards. In this category, he will compete against Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole, 21 Savage, Drake, Cardi B, and others.
His additional nominations include Song of the Year for “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” ft. 21 Savage, Best Hip-Hop Video for the same track, Best Collaboration, Best Live Performer, Lyricist of the Year, and Hustler of the Year.
It’s worth noting that Ghana’s Black Sherif, Zambia’s Sampa The Great, and South African rappers K.O and AKA were nominated in the Best International Flow category. However, for the first time since the category’s creation in 2019, no Nigerian rapper was nominated.
The 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards will be recorded in Atlanta on Tuesday, October 3, and will premiere on BET one week later, on Tuesday, October 10, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
