Burna Boy equals Wizkid’s record, receives plaque for 1 billion streams in UK
Nigerian artist Burna Boy has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 1 billion streams in the UK, joining an elite club of African artists. However, he expressed disappointment upon receiving a commemorative BRIT plaque for this achievement, which came two years after he hit the milestone.
The ‘African Giant‘ artist was awarded the BRIT plaque during his sold-out show at the London Stadium on Saturday night in recognition of this accomplishment.
Despite the honor, Burna Boy voiced his displeasure, highlighting the delay in the recognition. “What I want to know is why I’m getting this? Why not add all of them together; a bigger one. This was two years ago; nawa for una o. You people should update but I appreciate it,” he remarked.
It’s noteworthy that Burna Boy joins fellow Nigerian artist Wizkid as one of the only African artists to surpass a billion streams in the United Kingdom.
Burna Boy also holds the record for the highest-peaking African album on the UK chart, with his sixth studio album ‘Love, Damini’ topping the chart in July 2022.
In addition to his streaming milestone, Burna Boy became the first African artist to sell out the 80,000-capacity London Stadium twice, following his sold-out show on Saturday.
