Burna Boy was not in top 3 until 2019 – British podcaster (Video)
Opinions about Burna Boy’s rise to prominence in the Nigerian music industry may vary, and the perspective presented by the British podcaster suggests that Burna Boy did not achieve the status of a leading act until the release of his ‘African Giant’ album in 2019.
The podcaster argued that prior to 2019, the two dominant figures in the industry were Wizkid and Davido, often referred to as the “Top 2.” According to this viewpoint, Burna Boy did not have the same level of influence or bragging rights as his colleagues during that period.
The media personality acknowledged Burna Boy as a good artist but suggested that, until 2019, he did not possess a catalogue comparable to Wizkid’s (often referred to as “Machala”) or Davido (referred to as “Omo Baba Olowo”).
The mention of Burna Boy’s breakthrough after the Coachella fiasco in 2019 indicates that the incident may have played a role in elevating his profile.
According to him; “In my calendar there was only top 2 up until 2019, before that there was nothing like top 3. Burna Boy did not get in that top 3 mix up until 2019 when African Giant was released.
He was a decent artiste, a great artiste, don’t get me wrong, but in my book he was not in the top 3, there was no top 3 then.”
The co-host countered the British podcaster’s assessment by suggesting that Burna Boy was facing challenges with his management and flight restrictions during the period in question. This explanation was put forward to argue that Burna Boy’s ability to focus on his music might have been hindered compared to other artists in the industry.
The co-host’s response implies that external factors, such as management issues and travel restrictions, could have played a role in shaping Burna Boy’s career trajectory during that specific time frame. It highlights the potential impact of external circumstances on an artist’s ability to fully engage with their craft and contribute to their recognition within the industry.
