Nigerian music legend Bright Chimezie appreciates Davido for sampling his song
Veteran Nigerian Highlife musician Chief Bright Chimezie has shared his admiration for Davido’s hit song ‘With You’ featuring Omah Lay, which creatively samples his iconic track ‘Because of English.’
Taking to his official Instagram page, the Ziggima pioneer posted a video of himself dancing joyfully to the trending single while offering heartfelt appreciation to the duo for reviving a piece of his musical legacy.
“You can see I am vibing to the song already. It’s a beautiful piece of work, very wonderful. I appreciate the fact that you said you picked the inspiration from this song I recorded many years ago; I appreciate you for that,” he said in the video.
‘With You,’ produced by hitmaker Tempoe, merges contemporary Afro-fusion with the nostalgic rhythms of Highlife and Funk, a genre that defined Nigerian music in the 1970s and 80s, especially through the works of legends like Bright Chimezie.
The track, which forms part of Davido’s fifth studio album, continues a growing trend of new-generation Nigerian artistes embracing and reinterpreting sounds from earlier eras of Nigerian music.
In response to the veteran’s endorsement, Davido took to his comment section, expressing reverence in the Igbo language.
He wrote: “Ihe di ka gi akokwala m. Chief Sir Bright Chimezie, Ezigbote Onye Egwu,” which translates to, “People like you inspire me. Chief Sir Bright Chimezie, a true music legend.”
Fans across social media have hailed the cross-generational collaboration as a beautiful blend of old and new, further reinforcing the timelessness of Nigerian musical heritage.
