Nigerian highlife icon Bright Chimezie is enjoying a powerful resurgence as his timeless hit Because of English makes its debut on the Spotify Nigeria Top 100 chart—nearly four decades after its original release.
Originally released in 1984, the socially conscious anthem entered the chart at No. 99, marking Chimezie’s first-ever appearance on the streaming platform’s coveted rankings. The milestone underscores the enduring power of great music—and the new generation’s hunger for rich, authentic Nigerian soundscapes.
This charting feat follows a headline-making link-up between Chimezie and Afrobeats megastar Davido, who recently released his fifth studio album, 5ive. One of the album’s standout tracks, With You featuring Omah Lay, draws direct inspiration from Because of English, a fact Davido publicly acknowledged while celebrating the legacy of the highlife veteran.
Their connection began with a heartfelt video call and quickly evolved into a face-to-face meeting in Lagos, where Davido warmly hosted Bright Chimezie. Viral clips from May 19, 2025, show the two artists bonding over their shared love for culturally rooted music, with Davido visibly excited and full of admiration.
According to close associates—including socialite Cubana Chief Priest—the visit wasn’t just a meet-and-greet. Chimezie is reportedly collaborating on a forthcoming music video, possibly for With You. Cubana wrote in celebration:
