Nigerian Alté singer BOJ has opened up about the artists who shaped his sound and continue to inspire his creative journey, a blend of personal favorites and industry icons who, in his words, define the evolution of Nigerian music.

During a recent chat on the Madame Joyce podcast, the Money & Laughter crooner reflected on the musicians who have influenced his artistry over the years. He spoke with visible admiration for soul-folk legend Asa, describing her as one of his biggest inspirations.

“I love Aṣa a lot, that’s like one of my favourite artistes,” BOJ said, expressing deep respect for her timeless voice and unmatched contribution to Nigerian music.

His remark sparked a lighthearted moment on the show when the host admitted she didn’t know who Asa was, a confession that left BOJ both amused and eager to explain her legacy.

He went on to highlight Asa’s influence on generations of Nigerian artists and how her music helped pave the way for the rise of more soulful, alternative sounds.

Expanding on his list of inspirations, BOJ also named Afrobeats powerhouses Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy, along with industry trailblazers like Don Jazzy, D’Banj, and M.I Abaga. According to him, these artists embody different eras of Nigerian music that continue to shape its evolving soundscape.

For BOJ, the connection between the old and new is what makes Nigerian music so rich. His reflections serve as a reminder that the Alté movement, often celebrated for its creativity and experimentation, is built on a strong foundation laid by legends like Asa while drawing energy from today’s global Afrobeats stars.

MADAME JOYCE: Is it bad that I don’t know who that is?
