Erik Ten Hag Appointed Bayer Leverkusen Manager After Xabi Alonso’s Exit to Real Madrid

German Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen have officially announced the appointment of Dutch tactician Erik Ten Hag as their new manager, following the exit of Xabi Alonso to Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Ten Hag, who has been without a managerial role since parting ways with Manchester United in 2024, has now sealed a return to the dugout, marking the start of his Bundesliga career. His appointment was confirmed by the club via an official statement released on Monday, May 26, 2025.
The 54-year-old signed a two-year contract that will see him lead Leverkusen until at least the summer of 2027.
Speaking on his new role, Ten Hag expressed excitement and confidence in the club’s project:
“Bayer Leverkusen is one of the best clubs in Germany and also belongs to the expanded European elite. The club offers excellent conditions, and the talks with those responsible have impressed me very much.”
Leverkusen’s pursuit of Ten Hag had gathered momentum ever since speculation intensified over Alonso’s likely move to Madrid to succeed Carlo Ancelotti.
Now that the former Spanish international’s departure has been confirmed, the club wasted no time in securing an experienced replacement.

Ten Hag arrives at the BayArena with a solid reputation for tactical discipline and squad development, having previously guided Ajax to domestic glory and a memorable UEFA Champions League semi-final run in 2019. His stint at Manchester United yielded a Carabao Cup win and a third-place Premier League finish in the 2022/23 season, though inconsistency marred his final months at Old Trafford.
Leverkusen supporters will be hopeful that the Dutchman can sustain the momentum built under Alonso and mount a serious challenge to perennial rivals Bayern Munich, beginning with the 2025/26 campaign.
With expectations high and a talented squad at his disposal, all eyes will be on Ten Hag as he attempts to cement Leverkusen’s status among Europe’s elite and deliver more silverware in the coming seasons.
