Popular Nigerian Comedian, Basketmouth has disclosed that fear kept him from releasing music for a long time prior to his debut album last year.
Basketmouth revealed during a Black Box interview with Ebuka that he has always been recording music but that fear has never let him release any.
In the interview which first aired on YouTube on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, Ebuka inquired about Basketmouth’s decision to pursue a career in comedy.
Basketmouth responded by saying that he used to do music before he became a comedian and even joked about being a “failed rapper.” He told Ebuka that he used to be in a rap group with his friends, and they were all hilarious, so he didn’t think much of it.

He mentions Wizkid, eLDee, Faze, and Darey Art Alade as artists with whom he has collaborated but has never released any material.
In his words;
Then, music stayed on one side all the while. I tried, did something with Wizkid, eLDee The Don, Darey Art Alade, Faze… All of the I did not release. Because I was scared, until the opportunity presented itself.
Basketmouth also revealed the process of creating his debut album, Yabasi, in his Black Box interview with Ebuka.
He explains how the album is a fusion of highlife and hip-hop, and why he chose Duktor Sett as the producer to carry out his vision.
