Renowned Nigerian comedian Basketmouth has revealed why he stopped taking up roles as a Master of Ceremonies (MC) at weddings, despite the financial opportunities such gigs present.

Speaking at the premiere of his debut feature film, ‘A Ghetto Love Story,’ Basketmouth explained that the decision was rooted in his commitment to preserving the authenticity of his craft.

“The only thing I have stopped is private gigs like weddings and all. It is a sacrifice I have to make because I do standup comedy, that is what I do,” he shared. “I did not enter this industry to be an MC of a wedding and all that.”

The comedian elaborated further, noting that his discomfort stemmed from feeling that such engagements were diluting his art. “I felt like I was adulterating the art, I felt bad about it, and I had to stop. So if I am doing a private gig, I’ll be doing standup comedy, not the MC,” he clarified.

Basketmouth emphasized that while he has chosen to forgo wedding hosting, he remains open to performing at private events but strictly in a standup comedy capacity. “Let me just do my 30 minutes and bounce, but not as the MC of any event. I cannot do it anymore; that is like I am cheating on my craft,” he stated.

Although the decision means missing out on significant income, Basketmouth insists it’s not about the money. “I am losing a lot of money, but it is not about the money now,” he concluded, highlighting his dedication to his craft over financial gain.

Fans and fellow comedians have since praised his decision, recognizing the bold step towards prioritizing artistic integrity in an industry often driven by financial rewards.
