Nigerian Afrobeat sensation Ayra Starr shared the story of her reaction upon learning about her Grammy nomination in a recent interview with The Beat FM on Friday, January 26, 2024. The Mavin Records signee, nominated in the Best African Music Performance category for her hit song “Rush,” provided insights into her perspective and response to the prestigious recognition.

Ayra Starr, who was on tour in Germany when the news broke, described the moment when calls and messages flooded in from friends and colleagues informing her of the exciting development. Overwhelmed with gratitude, she recounted, “Thank you Jesus. I just went to sleep. I didn’t even like do anything. I just went to sleep. Hmm. You’ve tried.”

The unexpected Grammy nomination served as a remarkable honor for the 21-year-old artist, adding a significant milestone to her accomplishments in the previous year.

Despite the achievement, Ayra Starr emphasized her commitment to staying true to herself and avoiding the pressures of industry expectations. She highlighted her dedication to excellence and personal growth in her music career.

In her words, “I feel like if you allow pressure consume you, you’re not going to do anything. So, I feel like just do your thing. That’s how I’ve been doing.just staying in my lane doing my thing, whatever wants to happen will happen. I didn’t ask for any Grammys nomination. I just did my thing and i got it. If I don’t get it next year, probably, or this year, but, you know, am not going to like, kill myself. I’m just going to continue working.”

In response to questions about potential burnout, Ayra Starr conveyed her unwavering dedication to her craft. She recognized the evolution in her performances over the years, attributing this growth to consistent practice and a steadfast commitment to delivering quality to her fans.

“I don’t think that point is coming anytime soon because I have a commitment to excellence and its like, I know what am here to do. I wasn’t. The way I performed now that’s not how I used to perform two years ago. It’s just practise makes perfect and I know what am trying to do with my brand. I know what am trying to give my fans and I just want to keep working till I get to that point,” she said.
