Ayra Starr makes Billboard ’21 Under 21′.
The American music publication Billboard has featured Nigerian afrobeat artist, Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, also known as Ayra Starr, in its list of the 21 Under 21 artists for this year.
On the 2023 list, which was made public on Monday through the Billboard website, the 20-year-old was the lone musician from Africa.
She reached the top of the list with 138.2 million US on-demand streaming.
Youngsters such as Olivia Rodrigo, The Kid Laroi, D4vd, and Gayle all made the list.
Afropop musician Ayra Starr signed a record deal with Mavin Records in 2021 as a result of the different covers she had shared on Instagram. Mavin Records is one of Nigeria’s most significant record companies.
The Nigerian singer, who was born in Benin, released her debut album, 19 & Dangerous, which featured Fousheé and Ckay, as well as her self-titled EP, which produced the smash song “Away,” which peaked at No. 17 on Billboard’s Top Triller Global list.
Since then, she has contributed to songs by Wizkid and Libianca. In February, she released her most recent track, “Sability.”
The biggest predictors of success in today’s music industry, in her opinion, are “real talent, hard work, and perseverance,” she continues, adding that “success can also be shown by how well you handle promotion on socials like Instagram and TikTok, in the way you put yourself out there, and how you show a creative and entrepreneurial spirit.”
