‘I was so excited’ – Ayra Starr on making Barack Obama’s playlist.
Talented Afrobeat singer Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, known professionally as Ayra Starr, has expressed delight at being featured on former US President Barack Obama’s playlist.
Recall, Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush’ was one of the 25 songs on Obama’s 2022 end-of-year music playlist.
In a recent interview with NME, the 20-year-old singer expressed her delight at reaching Obama’s playlist, saying she had hoped to make it eventually.
She said, “The funny thing about that is that, the morning before the list came out. I was in the shower and I was like, I really would really like to be on Barack Obama’s list for next year.
“I just thought about it, I didn’t know it was coming out. And I prayed, and I was like, ‘God, please just do this one for me. Please.’
“And somebody tagged me, like somebody sent the post to me and it wasn’t loading so I couldn’t really see, but I was like, this is Obama. I was like, why are people sending me Obama’s posts? I couldn’t see the picture. I was like, it is, it is! And I saw it and I was so excited.”

Meantime, Ayra Starr has opened up on the story that led to her writing a song about her body size.
Speaking about the song, Ayra revealed that it was the funniest song she has ever written.
When about why she started the song with daring lyrics, she said;
“Ha! How did I even write this song? I am just always inspired by a lot of things. I wrote “Beggie Beggie” in a bus because I saw somebody begging outside and it just inspired me. So, the weirdest things always inspire me. Why did I write this song? I think I wrote it because a girl that was my friend – I don’t know if she was my friend – we just knew each other. And her boyfriend, I think she was scared her boyfriend liked me.
The Interviewer asked; “But did he like you though?”
AYRA STARR: I’m not sure he liked me because like, why? I’m not sure he liked me. He didn’t. It was very professional. But [the song] was just my way of saying you don’t have to be insecure. I was trying to explain to her but she was still like [angry]. So I was like you know what girl? Forget that I’m skinny, forget! I can do what I want but I’m not going to do it. I wanted her to know that it’s very easy for me to do what I want to do, but I’m not going to do it.
