Atletico Madrid 4-2 Real Madrid (aet): Griezmann stunner decides epic cup derby
Real Madrid’s impressive 21-game unbeaten streak came to an abrupt halt on Thursday as they were eliminated from the Copa del Rey in the round of 16 by city rivals Atletico.
The decisive moment in the match came from Antoine Griezmann’s outstanding goal in extra time, securing a 4-2 victory for Atleti. Substitute Rodrigo Riquelme also contributed with a goal at the end of the match.
The initial 90 minutes saw the two teams exchanging four goals, starting with Samuel Lino putting the hosts in the lead in a chaotic derby clash that resulted in a total of 13 yellow cards, including one for Atletico’s manager Diego Simeone. Jan Oblak’s own goal equalized the score; Alvaro Morata then scored against his former club; and Joselu later forced the match into extra time. Ultimately, Atletico emerged victorious, ending Real Madrid’s unbeaten run in a thrilling encounter.
The match began with nervy moments from both sides, establishing a good tempo in the opening stages. Atletico sought to impose physical authority, but the team dressed in all-white demonstrated their willingness to respond with equal intensity.

Jude Bellingham showcased individual brilliance in the 11th minute, nearly giving Madrid the lead. He dribbled into a dangerous position, including a cheeky nutmeg on Axel Witsel, and struck the crossbar. Replays revealed a vital deflection from Jose Gimenez’s block that prevented a certain goal.
Midway through the first half, more defensive heroics were required when Rodrygo beat Atletico’s offside trap. Gimenez recovered to poke the ball away, and Oblak’s quick reactions parried the ball to prevent a potential own goal. Oblak then immediately blocked Vinicius Junior’s attempt to convert the rebound.
In the closing stages of the first half, Lino broke through to score Atletico’s first big chance, finishing on the stretch after peeling off Dani Carvajal. Antonio Rudiger’s attempt to clear the initial cross inadvertently set up the goal for Lino.
Madrid equalized six minutes later when Oblak’s attempt to punch clear a Luka Modric free-kick resulted in an own goal.
In the second half, Andriy Lunin’s error allowed Atletico to retake the lead against the run of play, with Morata capitalizing on the opportunity.
Madrid searched for a second equalizer, hitting the bar for the second time as Rodrygo’s shot deflected onto the frame of the goal.
Atletico missed a chance to extend their lead, with Marcos Llorente’s cross finding Lunin’s gloves rather than an unmarked teammate. Moments later, Lunin made a crucial save from Morata, followed by Madrid’s second equalizer.
Joselu, coming off the bench, scored instantly, heading in Bellingham’s miscued shot.
Griezmann’s go-ahead goal in extra time was a display of skill and chaos, with Vinicius inadvertently pushing the ball into Griezmann’s path. Madrid had a disallowed goal in the second half of extra time, and Atletico sealed the victory with Riquelme’s confident finish on the break in a two-on-one situation.
