Nigerian artist Asake recently shared his insights on the challenges faced by individuals with tattoos when seeking employment in Nigeria. In a feature published in the latest issue of GQ magazine, Asake recounted his personal experiences dealing with the stigma associated with his visible neck tattoo.

According to Asake, his neck tattoo posed significant hurdles in his professional endeavors, limiting his employment opportunities. “In Nigeria, if you have a tattoo on your neck, you can’t work anywhere,” he stated. “I can’t work for any company. I can’t sell anything.”

Asake’s candid remarks shed light on the prevailing biases and stereotypes surrounding tattoos in the Nigerian job market. His story serves as a poignant example of how individuals with visible tattoos may encounter difficulties securing employment or conducting business due to potential employer reservations.

Beyond discussing the challenges posed by his tattoo, Asake also reflected on his journey to success in the Nigerian music scene. Despite perceptions of him as an “overnight success,” he clarified that his ascent to fame was a gradual process marked by perseverance and dedication.

Through Asake’s narrative, there emerges a call for greater acceptance and inclusivity toward individuals with tattoos, particularly in professional environments. His experiences underscore the broader societal obstacles confronting those with visible tattoos in Nigeria.
