Mikel Arteta explains how Bukayo Saka’s Arsenal absence will make him ‘better manager’
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has acknowledged that coping without injured winger Bukayo Saka will be a significant challenge but believes it could ultimately make him a better coach.
Saka is expected to be sidelined for “many weeks” after tearing his hamstring, with reports suggesting his absence could stretch to three months. The injury is feared to be a recurring issue, complicating Arsenal’s plans as they push through the season.
Adding to the difficulty, backup winger Raheem Sterling also suffered an injury during training. Arteta admitted that the situation might compel Arsenal to explore options in the transfer market to address their growing concerns.
When asked whether this challenge could enhance his managerial abilities, Arteta responded positively:
“I think so, yes. We started the season with one of the thinnest squads in the Premier League, and we knew that. If we have the thinnest squad, what do we need? We’ve really looked into how to maximize every player’s potential and ensure everyone feels involved.
“You need to rediscover players in different roles and foster new connections on the pitch. It’s a valuable exercise, and the team has shown incredible willingness to adapt to whatever we ask of them.”
To mitigate Saka’s absence, Arteta is relying on a mix of players, including Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Leandro Trossard, and young talent Ethan Nwaneri. However, a pressing concern remains the creative void left by Saka, who has been the team’s top playmaker this season.
Saka has recorded 10 assists in 16 Premier League games, many from set pieces, and no other Arsenal player has contributed more than three assists this campaign. His extended layoff could significantly impact Arsenal’s offensive creativity, making it a critical period for the team to adapt.
