In a landmark report from Apple Music, over 200 African artists have made it to the Shazam Global Top 200 between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, reflecting the continent’s surging global musical influence.

Within this period, 12 songs from Africa broke into the Top 10 of the chart, with Nigeria leading the pack in terms of number of entries. Notably, three African songs ascended to the No. 1 spot globally a feat that underscores the genre’s growing worldwide impact.

    Among the top-charting songs were:

    • ‘Shake It To The Max (FLY) [Remix]’ by MOLIY, Silent Addy, Skillibeng & Shenseea
    • ‘My Darling’ by Nigerian rising star Chella
    • ‘Biri Marung’ by Mr Pilato, Ego Slimflow & Tebogo G Mashego, featuring Sje Konka, Focalistic, DJ Maphorisa, Scotts Maphuma & CowBoii

Nigerian artists were particularly dominant among the top performers, with hits like Davido’s ‘With You’ featuring Omah Lay, Faceless & Serøtonin’s ‘Venus,’ Shallipopi’s ‘Laho,’ and Fido’s ‘Joy Is Coming’ breaking into the top 10.

In a touching moment for music lovers, the classic tune ‘Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche’ by the late Gentleman Mike Ejeagha also re-entered the limelight.

The 40-year-old Highlife classic went viral in 2025 after it was featured in popular skits by Nigerian comedian Brain Jotter, bringing renewed attention to the icon’s timeless legacy.

Reacting to his Shazam success, Chella shared:

“Shazam has been an important music tool for me, helping me connect with people around the world and letting them discover my sound. ‘My Darling’ got picked up by many on Shazam, and that pivoted my career shift positively.”

Moliy, the Ghanaian-American singer behind one of the chart-topping hits, also spoke on her experience:

“It’s been incredible to see how far ‘Shake It to the Max’ has travelled. To know that people all over the world are hearing the song, pulling out their phones to find out who I am–that’s wild! It’s taken my music to places I’ve never been and helped me connect with fans from the Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe.”

Shazam, which boasts over 300 million monthly users and has logged 100 billion recognitions since its inception, continues to play a crucial role in global music discovery. Its predictive power in identifying emerging trends and breakout stars remains a game-changer for artists worldwide, especially from Africa.
