‘Black Sherif is the voice of the youth in Africa’- Akon
Senegalese-American artist Akon recently heaped praise upon Ghanaian sensation Black Sherif, dubbing him the “voice of the African continent.”
In an interview with BBC 1Xtra, Akon lauded Black Sherif, also known as Blacko, by expressing admiration for his music and characterizing him as the “voice of the African youth.”
When asked about an African artist who symbolizes the continent, Akon recounted how he discovered Black Sherif’s music, highlighting the impact and resonance it holds within the African community.
He said, “I am a huge fan of Blavk sherif right now. I think he reminds me of the energy of myself when I came out. I remember that first record. I was in New York City when a friend of mine named Bako from Mali played me the song, I said ‘yo who the F is that?’ Like you can hear in his voice. You can feel the pain, you can feel the struggle, you hear the challenges but you can just hear a ghetto kid just wanting to get out. It’s the way he says it. You know it’s real and it’s not fabricated”.
Akon further emphasized his admiration for Black Sherif’s authenticity, noting how he could discern the struggle and pain in the Ghanaian artist’s lyrics. He stressed the importance for major labels closely monitor Black Sherif’s trajectory in the industry.
Expressing his eagerness to collaborate with Black Sherif, Akon highlighted the potential for their partnership to produce impactful music that resonates with audiences globally.
He said, “You feel that especially if you have been that. I was like ‘wow this kid is going to be something and if no major picks him up; they need to get to him before I do’. That boy right there is a monster. He is the voice of the youth in Africa”.
