Paulo Fonseca SACKED by Milan after just six months following frustrating Roma draw – with new head coach already lined up to replace him
AC Milan have officially parted ways with head coach Paulo Fonseca after just six months in charge, following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Roma that left the Rossoneri eighth in Serie A.
Despite Fonseca initially claiming he had “no signal” indicating he would lose his job, he later confirmed his departure when speaking to reporters as he exited the San Siro.
In an official statement, the club announced: “AC Milan announces that Paulo Fonseca has been relieved from his duties as Head Coach of the Men’s First Team. The Club extends its gratitude to Paulo for his great professionalism and wishes him the very best in his future endeavours.”
Fonseca, who joined Milan over the summer, had shown promise in the Champions League, with the team currently ranked 12th out of 36. However, inconsistent domestic performances have left them 14 points behind Serie A leaders Atalanta, prompting the club to act.
Reports from Italy suggest that former Porto manager Sergio Conceição, who previously played for Inter Milan, is the leading candidate to replace Fonseca. If appointed, it is unclear whether Conceição will take charge in time for Milan’s Supercoppa Italiana semi-final against Juventus on January 3.
The pressure will be on Milan’s next manager to revive the team’s Serie A campaign while maintaining their strong European form, with players like Christian Pulisic and his teammates eager for stability and direction.
