American rapper A$AP Rocky has shared a heartfelt story about how his late mum once played matchmaker in his love life, urging him to walk away from a former relationship and take a chance on global superstar Rihanna.
Speaking in a recent interview with The New York Times, Rocky looked back on his long-standing friendship with Rihanna and revealed that his mother was convinced, long before romance entered the picture, that the Barbadian singer was meant for him.
According to the rapper, his mother repeatedly encouraged him to pursue Rihanna, even at a time when he was romantically involved with someone else and insisted that he and Rihanna were nothing more than friends.
“Rihanna has always been my boo. I always f*cked with her,” Rocky said.
“My mother used to say, ‘I know you like this girl that you are with right now, but I want you with Riri.’ And I would tell her that Rihanna is just a friend. But my mother insisted that Rihanna is a real one. Mothers know best.”
Rocky explained that, in hindsight, he is thankful that their relationship did not begin earlier, noting that both he and Rihanna needed time to grow before stepping into the commitment and family life they now share.
“I am thankful that my relationship with Rihanna started when it did. Because at any time prior to that, I don’t think I was ready for something like that. I don’t think she was either,” he added.
The pair first became close in 2013 when Rocky joined Rihanna on her Diamond World Tour, a period that laid the foundation for their deep bond. Romance rumors, however, only gained momentum in 2020, shortly after Rihanna’s split from Saudi billionaire Hassan Jameel.
They later confirmed their relationship publicly and have since built a family together, welcoming their first child in 2022, their second in 2023, and a third child in 2025.
Before settling down with Rihanna, A$AP Rocky was previously linked to model Kendall Jenner, whom he dated between 2016 and 2017.
