Jorja Smith has shed light on how her collaboration with Wizkid on ‘Alive’ came together, revealing that the song was already a Wizkid record before she ever heard it.
The British singer made the revelation during an interview with JAM FM Berlin while discussing her new album, the creative process behind the project, and her concerns about artificial intelligence in music.
According to Smith, ‘Alive’ is the oldest song on the album. She explained that Nigerian-British producer P2J had already worked on the record with Wizkid before she was introduced to it.
“P2J had that song with Wiz already, and then I heard it,” she said.
Smith explained that Wizkid’s existing contribution helped shape the direction she eventually took with the song, allowing her to find her own perspective within the record rather than approaching it as a traditional guest feature.
Describing the inspiration behind her part, the singer likened the song to the feeling of travelling towards someone at the beginning of a new relationship.
“It was just reminding me of driving down to meet someone. There’s like a driving force in the song, a pull,” she said.

For Smith, that feeling ultimately ties into the theme of discovering new love. The accompanying music video was also filmed in Paris, a setting she felt matched the romantic energy of the track.
The song’s origins also highlight the creative relationship between P2J and Wizkid. The producer has worked closely with the Nigerian superstar across several projects, including much of Made in Lagos, as well as songs from More Love, Less Ego and Morayo.
Away from the music itself, Smith also spoke about the growing challenge of AI-generated content being mistaken for her work. She revealed that even members of her family had been fooled by AI-generated material.
“AI is kind of a scary grey area. Where is this going?” she said.
Smith added that she has been working with her team to monitor the situation and respond whenever fake content claiming to be connected to her surfaces online.
