Nigerian singer Spyro has opened up about a difficult chapter of his childhood, recalling how repeated accusations from his father left a lasting emotional impact on him.

The singer shared the experience during an interview with Arise TV presenter Rufai Oseni, where he spoke about growing up under the strict watch of his father, whom he described as a pastor.

According to Spyro, he was often blamed whenever money went missing in church, with his father allegedly accusing him of stealing in front of other people. He said the public embarrassment became particularly painful when the missing money was eventually found elsewhere.

“My dad is a pastor. He will tell outsiders that this boy is a thief. Once money misses in church, he will point to me. All the public embarrassment, and then when he eventually finds what he’s looking for, he buys you milk.

When we got home, my dad flogged me and left a mark that’s still on my back 22 years later. It broke me because I told this man the truth and I suffered for it.

If not for the love from my mom and how she was able to constantly balance things up, it affected me because I felt since he believes I’m a terrible child, let me just be terrible,” he recalled.

Spyro also remembered another incident from his school days involving a cleaner who he said scratched his head with her long nails. After reporting the incident to his father, he claimed he was accused of lying and punished instead.

The singer said experiences like these gradually affected the way he viewed himself. According to him, being repeatedly treated as though he was a “terrible child” eventually made him consider embracing the very image that had been placed on him.

Despite the painful memories, Spyro acknowledged the role his mother played in helping him navigate his childhood. He credited her love and support with providing the balance he needed during those difficult years.

“I broke up with my dad after I told him a school cleaner scratched my head with her long nails, but he called me a liar. We went to confront her, and she denied knowing me. When we got home, my dad flogged me and left a mark that’s still on my back 22 years later.”
