    • Davido Opens Up on Family’s Power Business, Says Father Supplies Electricity Across Nigeria

Afrobeats superstar Davido has shed more light on the business empire built by his father, billionaire entrepreneur Adedeji Adeleke, revealing that the family’s energy company is one of the country’s biggest private electricity producers.

Speaking in a video that has been making the rounds online, the award-winning singer explained that his father’s company generates electricity for the national grid, describing the scale of the operation as one of the reasons behind the family’s long-standing success.

“Every time you put on light, he gets a check,” Davido said while explaining how the business generates revenue.

He went on to describe the company’s role in Nigeria’s power sector, noting that its responsibility ends with electricity generation before power is transferred to the government for distribution.

“We generate it and sell the power to the government because the government has the authority to distribute,” he said. “It’s not on us. All we’re doing is generating and providing.”

According to the singer, the company currently contributes about 18 per cent of Nigeria’s electricity supply and has ambitions to significantly expand its capacity in the coming years, with plans to eventually provide as much as 35 percent of West Africa’s electricity needs.

If accurate, the figures would place the Adeleke family’s energy business among the region’s largest private power producers.

Davido also reflected on his father’s entrepreneurial journey, revealing that Adedeji Adeleke became a millionaire at a remarkably young age.

“My dad made his first million when he was 23,” he said, adding that the achievement remains a source of inspiration within the family.

The singer made the remarks while discussing his family’s background and explaining why his father chose to return to Nigeria after studying abroad. Adedeji Adeleke has built business interests across several sectors, including energy, hospitality and entertainment, and is also the elder brother of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.

Davido also compared life in Nigeria with his experiences in the United States, where he also holds citizenship, pointing to the differences in public services and healthcare.

“Compared to America, you can’t even compare the benefits. You go to the hospital, you have insurance, get taken care of. Back home, everything is cash and carry,” he said.

“My dad made his first million at 23. Now, we generate about 18% of the country’s electricity and sell to the government to distribute.” — Singer Davido
