Grammy-nominated Nigerian singer Omah Lay has once again sparked conversation in the Afrobeats space after boldly declaring himself the “greatest Afrobeats artiste of the decade.”

Speaking during a recent chat with Capital Xtra, the “Understand” hitmaker doubled down on the statement with full confidence while also drawing a clear line around what he meant.

“I am the greatest Afrobeats artiste of the decade. I am the greatest,” he said.

However, Omah Lay quickly clarified that his claim wasn’t based on commercial success, streaming numbers, or popularity metrics that usually define mainstream dominance in music. Instead, he said his focus is strictly on artistry.

“Well, you can say numbers, and personality, and the level of fame, and stardom, maybe you would not consider me. When it comes to the art itself, I am the greatest.”

The Port Harcourt-born star has made similar remarks in the past, even previously describing himself as “Nigeria’s best artiste of the last 20 years,” a statement that has often divided opinion among fans and industry observers.

While debates around “greatness” in Afrobeats continue to surface from different artists, Omah Lay’s latest comments add another layer to the ongoing conversation about how success in the genre should truly be measured—artistry, numbers, or overall cultural impact.
