“How can you be asking how’s the daddy?” — Simi questions why anyone would ask about the daddy instead of the mother, new baby

Nigerian singer Simi has ignited widespread conversation online after speaking openly about pregnancy, childbirth, and why mothers deserve heightened care and attention during that period.
The award-winning artiste, who is married to singer AG Baby and recently welcomed a child, addressed a recurring argument she has seen from some men questioning why fathers are not equally checked on during pregnancy and labour.
“Some men will say, why is it that when a woman is pregnant or she’s giving birth, nobody asks after the daddy? It’s on sight. Are you listening? How is the daddy? What happened to the daddy?” she said.
Drawing from her personal experience, Simi stressed that childbirth is not a moment for comparison or competition.
According to her, the physical and emotional toll on women makes the focus on mothers both necessary and justified.
“Oh, I haven’t slept in 24 hours, I haven’t slept in 48 hours… so what? That moment is not your moment, okay? Did your vagina tear? Did they have to sew you? Did they have to stitch you back together?” she asked pointedly.
The singer went further to explain the long-term physical sacrifices involved in carrying a child, noting that pregnancy places enormous demands on a woman’s body.
“Have you been growing a human being in your body, with nutrients depleting from your body every day? Have you been swelling on and off? And that’s an easy pregnancy,” she added.
Simi also highlighted that many women endure months of nausea, medical complications, and pain, with pregnancy often carrying serious health risks and, in some cases, life-threatening consequences.
Clearly dismissing the repeated calls to redirect attention to fathers during childbirth, she concluded:
“Have you risked your life? Have you had multiple children? Stop asking how’s the daddy? How is the daddy?”
Her candid remarks have since resonated with many online, sparking discussions around motherhood, empathy, and the realities women face before, during, and after childbirth.
