Nigerian singer and songwriter Temilade Openiyi, widely known as Tems, has opened up about the story behind her song Big Daddy, shedding light on the personal experiences that shaped the feel-good track.

In a recent interview, the award-winning artist explained that the song was born from observing a certain type of personality she has encountered.
According to Tems, Big Daddy reflects her thoughts on people who are more focused on appearances than on genuine personal growth.
Sharing her perspective, she said, “Big Daddy was inspired by an experience with a type of person. I would describe the type of person as someone who wants to look cool but doesn’t work on themselves internally.
It translates to someone who wants control but doesn’t really add any value.”
Tems explained that while the song carries a playful, upbeat vibe, it also subtly touches on deeper character traits, making it easy for listeners who have had similar encounters to connect with its message.
The singer’s rise to global recognition began after her appearance on Wizkid’s 2020 smash hit Essence, which later climbed to number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 following the release of its remix featuring Justin Bieber.
The record proved to be a defining moment in her career, introducing her sound to audiences worldwide.
Since then, Tems has gone on to secure several major honours, including Grammy Awards, BET Music Awards, and American Music Awards.
Currently signed to RCA Records in the United States, she continues to strengthen her position as one of Nigeria’s most successful and influential voices on the global music stage.
