Spyro Raises Concerns Over Modern Music Culture

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, widely known as Spyro, has voiced fresh concerns about what he sees as a gradual erosion of value in the contemporary music landscape, warning that the shift is contributing to a wider moral decline across society.

The singer shared his thoughts during an appearance on the Adesope Live show, where he reflected on the kind of music that shaped earlier generations.

Spyro noted that back then, artists were more deliberate about storytelling, emotional resonance, and social impact elements he believes are slowly fading from today’s sound.

According to the Who’s Your Guy crooner, many modern tracks prioritise catchy rhythms and instant appeal, often at the expense of meaningful content.

He argued that this trend has diluted music’s cultural power, saying artists now seem more invested in the financial rewards than in influencing society for good.

Spyro urged musicians to rethink their approach and reconnect with the core purpose of music, using creativity to both entertain and inspire.

He stressed that while “vibes” are an important part of modern Afrobeats, they should not overshadow the emotional and moral depth that once defined the art form.

He appealed to his colleagues to be more intentional about their lyrical choices, adding that restoring substance to music could play a role in tackling the social issues affecting communities today.

“Music has lost its intrinsic value… A lot of the decadence that we have in the society today can be traced to the fact that music has lost its value.”
